12 Pawsome Ways to Ensure Your Pet Loves Your New Home Too

The search for a new home is an exciting time in your life and it can be for your furry friends too! But just like children, there are a lot of things to consider to ensure your pet  is happy in their new home. Not only do you need to think about the home itself, but also the community you are buying in. Follow these 12 tips and you’ll have a pet purr-fect home!

In the Home

Size of Your Yard
Some pets may be able to get by with little to no yard, but others need room to roam. Consider the size of your pets and their activity level when deciding how big of a yard you may need. Also consider whether or not you’ll need to install a fence or doggy door to keep them safe.

Home Layout
Your pet’s size should also impact the size of home you choose and your desired layout. Open floor concepts are perfect for larger pets to give them more room to run and play. Also consider whether or not your pet can go up and down stairs safely, or if a single-story may be more to their liking.

The Flooring
Whether your pet sheds or not, they are sure to create messes. Opt for hard floors for an easier clean up and area rugs that closely match your pets’ fur. Stain resistant rugs are also a plus. If  you have stairs, carpet may be a good option to protect your pets as they roam around the home.

Cozy Furniture
Just like their human companions, pets love a comfy couch! If you let your pets on your furniture, opt for cozy furniture that matches your pets’ fur color to hide some of their hair. If they have long claws, choose a durable, scratch resistant fabric that is also easily washable.

Choose Décor Wisely
Be wary of where you place breakable and chewable items as your pet may accidently bump them or decide it’s their new favorite toy. Keeping these items out of reach will keep both your valuables and your pet safe.

Not All Plants are Equal
Be cautious when choosing plants for your home both indoors and outdoors. Many common plants are actually quite dangerous for our furry friends if they ingest them. Make sure you do your research to ensure that beautiful addition won’t cause an unnecessary vet bill.

In the Community

Pet Friendly Activities
Do you take your dog everywhere? Some cities are way more pet friendly than others. Before making a move, make sure you and your dog will have pet friendly restaurants and stores nearby as well as dog parks and other outdoor activities.

HOA Laws
Double check the community rules where you are interested in buying. The Homeowner’s Association (HOA) may limit the number of pets, types of pets or have specific rules regarding pet behavior in the community. Make sure your pets are welcome in all of the areas you’ll want to be!

Weather Forecast
If you’re thinking of making a move to a new city or state, double check the yearly weather forecast. Some breeds of dogs may be extra sensitive to heat or cold and if they spend a lot of time outside you may need to rethink your schedule. Pets can take a while to adapt to a new schedule, so try to make slow changes before your move to help with a smooth transition.

Grooming
Does your pet require regular grooming? Don’t let a bad pup cut ruin your day. Scope out nearby grooming facilities before you move to make sure there is one that meets all of you and your pup’s needs.

Vet Visits
Don’t wait until there is an emergency to find a vet clinic. Upon moving, find and take your pet to the vet so they can get to know your pet when they are healthy. That way, if they wind up ill or there is an emergency you already have an established relationship.

Dog Daycare/Boarding
If you work full time or travel frequently, it’s a good idea to find a doggy daycare or boarding facility nearby. Take a tour with your pet, meet the staff and save their information so you’ll have it when you need it.

Change can be hard for our furry friends, but if you follow our tips your pets will love your new home as much as you!
