Decorating Your Home for the Holidays on a Budget

December 20, 2019 Lifestyle

You don’t have to skip decking your halls this season just because you’re on a budget! The holidays can already be an expensive time for many, so we like finding stress-free and inexpensive ways to get into the holiday spirit. Here are some tips for decorating your home that won’t cost a lot of money:

Lean on Mother Nature

Mother Nature can be one of your greatest holiday decorating allies- you can create a lot of decorations by simply stepping into your yard. Many items found outdoors can look incredibly festive with a few affordable and simple tweaks. Pick up some pinecones, grab some branches and sticks and you’d be surprised at the possibilities. Your decorating budget may be just beyond your back door, especially if you’re willing to get a little crafty.

Get Crafty

If you’re motivated enough, you can create all kinds of decorations from inexpensive materials you may have laying around your house or those found outside. Red ribbon can make a lot of ordinary objects merry. Pinecones and branches can contribute to the perfect centerpiece. Not sure where to start? Pinterest has tons of great DIY holiday decorations for all levels of crafters.

Repurpose Year-Round Items

You may have dishes or candles gathering dust in the back of a cupboard that can be made into decorations. Dust the cobwebs off of your plain white candles and wrap them in branches with fake berries or red bows. Use that old glass bowl or vase and fill it with pinecones or Christmas ornaments. Your soon-to-be ideal decoration may just be taking up storage space right now!

Try Thrifting

Thrift stores can have awesome, lightly used decorations at a bargain price! Check your local second-hand store around the holidays and you may be able to give some beautiful decorations a new home.

Buy a Fake Tree

While even fake trees may be pricey, using one each year is much more affordable than shopping for a live tree every 12 months (and a lot lower maintenance). Can’t go without that pine scent? Buy a pine candle and light it while you gather around your tree or hide pine car fresheners in the branches. You might not even notice your tree didn’t grow in the ground!

Wrap Gifts Early

Wrapped presents are a classic holiday decoration, especially under your tree! If you’re late on your shopping this year, not to worry. Find some unused shoe boxes or old electronic boxes and wrap them for decoration. Stack the empty wrapped boxes on your porch to create affordable yard envy.

Display Your Christmas Cards

When receiving holiday cards from loved ones you may simply read them, smile, and toss them in the trash. Try displaying them instead as a decorations. Display your cards upright on a mantle or unused entry way table. This will add holiday cheer while appreciating the thought your friends and family put into sending you a card.
